Modica, donated the organs of a man suffering from ALS


Modica - The man had a cardiorespiratory arrest, which occurred in his own home, which resulted in post-arrest anoxic brain damage.



Transported to the “Maggiore” hospital in the intensive care unit, director dott. Rosario Trombatore, the patient underwent cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. He was also subjected to neurological monitoring, with instrumental examinations of the case, and to the clinical one that found irreversible brain damage. The start of the procedure for therapeutic withdrawal and for the will of the family members who gave their consent to the removal of organs has been triggered, the Regional Transplantation Center was alerted - Palermo chaired by Dr. Bruna Piazza.

Also in this case, the necessary procedure that ended yesterday in the late afternoon, carried out by the director of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Rosario Trombadore and by dr. Guglielmo Scimonello assisted by the Ismett team from Palermo.

Organ harvesting took place with an innovative technique adopted by dr. Gaetano Burgio, present during the organ harvesting. Among other things, dr. Burgio has started a training course on the new technique in the Region. In fact, also in Sicily, thanks to the Regional Transplant Center and the ISMETT IRCCS of Palermo, a new program has been launched with the aim of increasing the number of organs available for transplantation.

First and foremost, the Strategic Management would like to thank the family that authorized the removal of organs, the UOC Reanimation Nurses, all the Operators of the Surgery Unit and the staff of the Analysis Laboratory, of the PO. of Modica.
