Archeology, underwater inspection in search of a ship's find

Ispica - Among Pozzallo and Ispica: inspection of the Superintendence of the Sea, the Core divers of Messina, the Coast Guard of Pozzallo, and the BCsicilia volunteers for the loading of a ship lapidary
Between Pozzallo and Ispica some sites of probable cultural interest had been reported a few months ago to the Superintendency of the sea, by Antonino Giunta, external collaborator of the Sopmare.

The Superintendency therefore carried out an inspection and documented the area. The team consisted of Fabrizio Sgroi and Claudio Di Franco of the Superintendency of the Sea, from ten. by Vascello Giuseppe Simeone, commander of the diver's core of the Port Authority of Messina along with other divers, by the frigate captain of the Coast Guard of Pozzallo, Pierluigi Milella, and by the crew of the patrol boat that provided the logistical support, by Gaetano Lino, Salvatore Ferrara and Giampiero Tomasello, divers of the BCsicilia association.

During scuba diving, which took place about a mile from the coast and at a depth of about ten meters, numerous blocks of worked and semi-finished stone material were found to be probably the load of a lapidary. The lapidary ships, on average 25 to 40 meters long and capable of carrying between one hundred and three hundred tons, were specially reinforced boats for holding enormous weights.
A sample was taken from one of the blocks in order to carry out a petrographic examination aimed at identifying the lithotype, the type of stone, to determine its attribution and the quarry from which it was extracted.
"This Superintendency - declares Valeria Li Vigni, Superintendent of the Sea - will carry out a more detailed investigation of the site identified between Pozzallo and Ispica, in order to substantiate further archaeological data and at the same time carry out analyzes and research aimed at reconstructing the historical context, identifying the 'boat and the period in which the interesting load, composed of blocks of stone material, is sunk ".
