Exceptional rains, in Ispica it had not happened for 200 years


Ispica - "The first surveys on rainfall in central-south-eastern Sicily this weekend, tell us that it was an exceptional situation that in some cases may occur every two hundred years. The violence of the precipitations with different characteristics in the different geographical areas of the island and their concentration in a short time, did the rest, causing considerable damage in numerous Municipalities ". This was declared by the head of the Civil Protection of the Presidency of the Sicilian Region, Calogero Foti on the basis of the surveys produced by the service Hydraulic and hydrogeological risk of the DRPC Sicily.

In particular, in the south-eastern sector - the Strait of Sicily (Ispica) side - Friday evening rains were particularly violent, with significant quantities concentrated in a short time (from 210 to 260 millimeters over an hour and a half) and with return times of over two hundred years. Rainfall is approximately 3 times the monthly average for the period (October).

"In the area of Noto - declared Giuseppe Basile, head of the Service who elaborated the data and prepared the relative graphs - the rains were less violent (from 50 to 150 millimeters in an hour) and with return times from 2 to 10 years. Compared to the monthly average of the same period, the fallen quantities amounted to about one and a half times. There are two important peaks: the first at 3.30 am, the other at 10 pm ».

In the eastern sector (Syracuse), rainfall was distributed over two days (25 and 26) reaching values from 80 to 150 millimeters, with intensity peaks from 45 to 75 millimeters in 3 hours and return times from 2 to 10 years.

In central Sicily (Ramacca area), recorded rainfall reached 130 millimeters in about twenty hours, with a significant peak of 50 millimeters, between 1.30 and 3.30 (standard time) on 27 October. The total amount of rain is equal to about one and a half times the average of the period, the return time of this event is between 2 and 10 years.
"The regional government, through the Civil Protection Department, was constantly present in the places where the bad weather conditions occurred with a constant presence both within the Crisis Unit at the Prefecture of Ragusa and within the COC (municipal coordination centers), declares Calogero Foti. Already yesterday, on the recommendation of the President of the Musumeci Region, we have launched a first phase of recognition of the damages for the purpose of recognizing the state of natural disaster ".
